Bowood House & Gardens
Enjoy a beautiful day visiting Lord and Lady Lansdowne’s family home, surrounded by acres of ‘Capability’ Brown landscape and stunning award winning gardens.
Bowood House has been the home to the Lansdowne family since the 1st Earl of Shelburne purchased it in 1754. Since then, the House has seen huge changes. From the 2nd Earl beginning major improvements using the renowned architect Robert Adam, who worked on the interiors including creating the beautiful Orangery, to the ‘Large House’ being demolished after the Second World War when it fell into disrepair. The collection of art and many historical treasures; such as Napoleon’s death mask, Queen Victoria’s wedding chair and the laboratory in which Dr Joseph Priestley identified oxygen gas, provides interest for all tastes.
Bowood is blessed by having three entirely separate and very different gardens; The Gardens and Grounds surrounding the House, The Private Walled Gardens, open for group visits and for individuals to book on to our monthly guided tour. Thirdly, the Woodland Gardens, a separate attraction open for six weeks from late April to early June, offering breath-taking vistas of colour and beauty, covering over seventy acres of Bluebells, Azaleas, Magnolias and Rhododendrons.
