The Original Garden Visitor's Guide

Dyffryn Gardens

Dyffryn Gardens is a hidden gem in the Vale of Glamorgan and an exceptional example of Edwardian garden design. Designed by eminent landscape architect Thomas Mawson on 1906, the gardens are the early 20th-century vision of coal magnate John Cory and his son Reginald, a renowned plantsman who collaborated closely with Mawson.

The gardens cover more than 55 acres, featuring a stunning collection of intimate garden rooms including a paved court, Pompeian garden, reflecting pool and rose garden. The enormous great lawn is bordered by seasonal bedding and a croquet lawn. There is also a large glasshouse with extensive displays of cactii and orchids, set within a working Kitchen Garden. Fresh Dyffryn-grown produce is used in café dishes, or can be purchased from the shop.

The 22-acre arboretum contains numerous champion trees and brilliant seasonal colours year-round. It is one of the most significant collections in the National Trust and is undergoing major transformation in the coming years.

Nestled in the centre is the remarkable Dyffryn House, a grand Victorian mansion which overlooks the key aspects of the gardens. The house is partially restored and tells the story of Dyffryn's history as well as the ongoing revival of these magnificent gardens.
