Orchid Day at Dyffryn Gardens
May 20 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
Escape to the exotics as the Orchid Study Group hosts their colourful Orchid Day at Dyffryn Gardens.
If you are someone who appreciates the delicate beauty of an orchid, just like fashion designer Ralph Lauren who used 100,000 live orchids for his New York Fashion Week show, the Orchid Study Group’s ‘Orchid Day’ at the National Trust’s Dyffryn Gardens on 20th May from 10am – 5pm will be a Saturday well spent.
From exotic displays, to fascinating talks and the chance to meet botanical artists, there will be lots to satisfy even the most avid orchid specialist. In conjunction with Fascination of Plants Day, Plant Scientists from Cardiff University will also be joining the Orchid Day, providing fun for all the family with science experiments and competitions.
Dr Kevin Davies, botanist, orchidologist and chairman of the Orchid Study Group commented “Last year, we held our first Orchid Day at Dyffryn. This proved to be so successful and popular that it is returning again this month to share these remarkable plants with a wider audience.”
You can learn from the experts by attending the following talks:
11:30 – 12:00 – Dino Zelenika: Wild Orchids in the Heart of the Balkans
12:15 – 12:45 – Sara Rittershausen of Burnham Nurseries: Basics of Orchid Cultivation
14:00 – 14:30 – Teenage orchid grower Archie Smith: Bulbophyllum; The good and the smelly
14:45 – 15:15 – Frances Quasada-Pallares: Orchid repotting and mounting demonstration
15:15 – 15:30 – Q&A
“So whether you are new to orchids, or an experienced grower wanting to learn more, or simply just thinking about growing a couple on your windowsill, there will be something here for you.” – Dr Kevin Davies
Families can also join Cardiff University’s Plant Scientists to extract DNA from strawberries, take part in their Plant Treasure Hunt and get creative to ‘Design a new Plant’. The best design will win a family day pass to Dyffryn Gardens.
Normal admission prices will apply on entry for the day.
