Many of the gardens which were affected by the Great Storm are featured in this 2008 edition of Gardens to Visit; Exbury in Hampshire, RHS Wisley in Surrey, Leonardslee in Sussex and Groombridge Place in Kent, to name just a few. Today, these gardens offer a beautiful living testimony to the skill, ingenuity and perseverance of the gardeners who have worked them since 1987.
In Gardens to Visit 2008 you will find gardens to suit all tastes from major National Trust properties such as Sissinghurst and Stourhead to private gems such as Carwinion, Marwood Hill and Painswick Rococo. I do hope you enjoy this brand new collection of gardens and may I wish you an exciting and rewarding year of garden visits in 2008.

Just over twenty years ago, the gardens of South-East England were just beginning to emerge from beneath a catastrophic layer of shattered trees and other debris – the result of the Great Storm of October 16th 1987. In the days and weeks that followed, my work took me into several gardens along the path of the storm and in every one I was met with similar scenes of devastation. Initially, those of us involved in horticulture and forestry thought that our gardens, parks and woodlands could never be the same again. Gradually however we came to view the storm as a blessing, a chance to re-plant for future generations, replace over mature avenues of trees and develop new and exciting vistas and features.
