Gardens to Visit

Owlpen Manor

“Owlpen, in Gloucestershire - ah, what a dream is there!” - Vita Sackville-West, 1941

This garden, set within a beautiful Cotswold valley, is a rare survival of an early formal garden on a manorial scale... ‘possibly the earliest domestic garden in England to survive in something approaching completeness’ -Sir Geoffrey jellicoe. It was re-ordered with terraces and strong symmetry in 1723 by Thomas Daunt IV.
The garden became an icon to the designers of the early twentieth century, as a ‘Sleeping Beauty’. Gertrude Jekyll visited the garden several times and featured it in her influential book, Gardens for Small Country Houses (1914). After being uninhabited for over 100 years, iit was restored sympathetically in ‘Old English’ style by Norman Jewson in 1926. Vita Sackville-West described the garden between the wars as a ‘dream’, one of ‘the places one has seen and loved’, whose yew rooms were precursors to those in her great garden at Sissinghurst.
The garden has been reordered since 1975 by Sir Nicholas and Lady Mander with magnificent yew topiary, old roses, hornbeams and box parterres on seven hanging terraces.
