One of the National Trust’s premier gardens, Nymans was a country retreat for the creative Messel family, and has views stretching out across the Sussex Weald. Today it’s still a place to recharge the batteries where you can glimpse hidden corners through stone archways, walk along tree lined avenues and be surrounded by lush green countryside.
From vibrantly colourful summer borders to the tranquillity of ancient woodland, Nymans is a place of experimentation with constantly evolving planting designs and a rare and unusual plant collection. The comfortable yet elegant house, a partial ruin, reflects the personalities and stories of the talented Messel family, from the Countess of Rosse to Oliver Messel and photographer Lord Snowdon. Large shop, plant and garden centre. Café serving a choice of seasonal food. Grab and go kiosk during peak hours. Second-hand bookshop.
Free, daily guided walks. Small gallery in the house with changing exhibitions for every season.
Opening Times: Closed 24 & 25 Dec. The house closes at 4pm 1 Mar – 31 Oct. Last admission to gallery is 30 mins before closing and gallery closes at 3.30pm in the winter 1 Nov – 28 Feb.
