The Original Garden Visitor's Guide

The Dorothy Clive Garden

The Dorothy Clive Garden is intimate, informal and inspiring. Set amidst glorious views of the Staffordshire countryside this twelve-acre garden was originally conceived in 1940 by Colonel Harry Clive. Since 1958 the evolution and development of this special horticultural oasis has been entrusted to The Willoughbridge Garden Trust (registered charity 622695).

The garden includes a diverse array of plants and just as significantly a rich tapestry of complementary designs and planting styles. Generally, the style is naturalistic and informal, as the topography of the hillside rises and falls across the site, creating sinuous curves and snaking lines everywhere you look. This semi-naturalistic informality, is reinforced by sensitive garden management practices regarding wild flowers, areas of long grass and the encouragement of wildlife. The garden is particularly rich in bird and insectlife.

Horticultural highlights of the garden include: The Royal Botanic Glasshouse (filled with Mediterranean climate zone plants), The Quarry Garden (rhododendrons and azaleas), Laburnum Arch (pictured), The Winter Garden, Daffodil Walk, a pond and scree, plus many themed herbaceous borders. The garden has an excellent tea room serving light lunches and homemade cakes which can be enjoyed by sitting outside on the sun terrace or indoors depending on the weather. A gift room and attendant plant sales area afford the opportunity to take home a memento of your day here.
