American Museum & Gardens
The American Museum takes you on a journey through the history of America, from its early settlers to the twentieth century. With its remarkable collection of folk and decorative arts, displayed in original period rooms from the US. All set within a fine Georgian manor house with outstanding views on the edge of Bath. Opened to the public in 1961 – the achievement of four colleagues: Dr. Dallas Pratt, John Judkyn, Nick Bell Knight and Ian McCallum. Collecting for the Museum began in earnest in 1958, facilitated by Judkyn’s business contacts – each piece testifying to the artistry of Americans and how these people had lived in the past.
The grounds total some 125 acres, of which 35 are open to visitors. The parkland, with its majestic old cedars, provides a circular walk through ancient meadows, while above the manor a path has been created through woodland.
With the addition of the New American Garden and the transformed Mount Vernon garden, the grounds now boast the largest collection of American horticultural features in the United Kingdom.
The New American Garden is the first European commission for Washington DC-based landscape architects Oehme, van Sweden (OvS). The planting follows the free-form style made famous by the firm’s founders, Wolfgang Oehme and James van Sweden.
