American Museum & Gardens

The American Museum takes you on a journey through American culture, and by extension its history, from its early settlers to the twentieth century. Its remarkable collection of folk and decorative arts is displayed in original period rooms from the US, all set within a fine Georgian manor house with outstanding views on the edge of Bath. With the opening of the New American Garden and the transformed Mount Vernon garden in 2018, the grounds now boast a unique collections of American horticultural features.

The New American Garden is the first European commission for Washington DC-based landscape architects Oehme, van Sweden. The planting follows the free-form style made famous by the firm's founders, Wolfgang Oehme and James van Sweden. It also feature accessible paths, rolling lawns, a grass amphitheatre, and busts of important men and women from American history.

The Mount Vernon Garden is a reflection of General and first President George Washington's Upper Garden at his Mount Vernon estate in Virginia, complete with symmetrical quadriform parterre, seed house, and fruit and vegetable planting. The garden offers a historical insight into Colonial American gardening.

The grounds, including parkland, total 125 acres, of which 35 are open to visitors.
