Belvoir Castle

Asset 1

Belvoir Castle sits proudly on a solitary hill, with its turrets and towers rising above the Vale of Belvoir, it is the ancestral home of the Dukes of Rutland. Surrounded by a Capability Brown landscape and spectacular views of Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire. The Rutland family have lived at Belvoir in an unbroken line for almost a thousand years and is currently the family home of the 11th Duke, the Duchess and their children. The Castle you see today was built for the 5th Duke and Duchess in 1819 by architect James Wyatt. The castle was given the French name "Belvoir" meaning beautiful view, now pronounced "Beaver". It remains one of the magnificent and beautiful Regency houses in England, with many rooms steeped in history along with an impressive collection of period furniture and art.

Amidst the 3000 acres of naturally designed landscape, Capability left 26 acres of pleasure gardens for Duchess's to leave their own mark. Elizabeth the 5th Duchess, faithfully followed Brown's plan, while Violet the 8th Duchess, hired Edwardian designer Harold Peto. And Emma the 11th Duchess, is responsible for today's 10-year extensive restoration program, with over 13 acres of woodlands being cleared and replanted with rare trees and shrubs. including Magnolias, Rhododendrons, Camellias, Azaleas, Enkianthus, and Styrax to name but a few. Carved into the steep hill of the castle is a formal Rose Garden that leads to wonderful views of Rhododendrons over the statue garden, Japanese woodland and other beautiful areas of Belvoir.
