The Original Garden Visitor's Guide

Houghton Lodge Gardens

Houghton Lodge Gardens is the ideal place to visit, whether your passion lies with Historic houses or beautiful gardens - or both. One of the most beautiful privately owned homes and gardens in Hampshire.

The Grade II* listed formal and informal gardens surround the UK's best surviving example of an 18th Century Cottage Orné, idyllically set above the tranquil waters of the River Test with views across picturesque water meadows. Chalk Cob walls enclose a traditional Kitchen Garden with a themed herb garden, rose arbour, avenue of old apple trees and espaliers, peony walk, asparagus beds, the well border, a wild flower meadow, and in summer, sweet peas elegantly entwining their way up their bamboo canes. Don't miss the wonderful Orchid House.

In early summer the fragrant peonies line the stunning rose arbour path leading to hidden corners of the garden. The Long Border has year long beauty, bursting with bulbs in the spring, a tapestry of colour in the summer, and dahlias to brighten your heart in the autumn. Enjoy over 15 acres of meadows and walks along the picturesque River Test and meet resident Alpacas, Tom, Dick, Harry and Herbert. Not forgetting the 'snorting' Topiary Dragon.

Freshly prepared light lunches, cream teas and homemade cakes are served with teas and coffees in the Honesty tea rooms at Houghton Lodge Gardens.
