New Christmas Afternoon Tea at Leonardslee

New Christmas Afternoon Tea at Leonardslee

Visitors to Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens can escape the cold and enjoy a special Christmas afternoon tea until December 24th. Michelin Star chef Jean Delport and his team have prepared seasonal homemade favourites with both sweet and savoury options, so it is ideal for both lunch and teatime, he says.
Guests can also visit Leonardslee Illuminated in December when the gardens are transformed with light trails, soundscapes and large-scale installations. There is also a fairground, seasonal food and drink to enjoy and a Christmas market with arts and crafts stalls and gifts for sale. Leonardslee annual members receive free entry to Illuminated when joining online.
Arriving for tea at historic Leonardslee House, guests are greeted by restaurant manager Anya and her friendly team, with soothing melodies from the self-playing piano in the grand hallway, which features a new exhibition by South African artists.
There are three menu options: classic, savoury and children's. The ingredients are freshly prepared, including ingredients foraged on the estate and raised at local farms. Chef Jean Delport says his staff ensure that every visitor has a unique and memorable experience.
Each menu features a variety of savoury and sweet delicacies, all served with home-baked scones, clotted cream, strawberry jam and lemon curd made to the chef’s own recipe.
Guests have a choice of finger sandwiches, such as cucumber and cream cheese, home-smoked salmon, and estate egg mayonnaise. There are seasonal savouries that might include eggs royale, chicken liver parfait, as well as coronation chicken bun, local parmesan tart and homemade sausage roll.
Seasonal patisseries and sweets follow, such as treacle tarts, lavender macaroons and chocolate mixes. Afternoon tea then finishes with a cake selection, such as a Battenberg or three-layer lemon cake.
“There are also some surprise Christmas treats, which might include Leonardslee special mince pies, stuffed Santa’s bellies, aged Christmas cakes and Christmas smells,” says Jean.
There is a variety of loose-leaf teas from which to choose, including black, white and green teas, as well as herbal infusions; Golden Chai is December’s tea of the month, featuring ginger, green cardamom and Indian turmeric from Sikkim.
Guests can enjoy award-winning wines from Leonardslee's sister property in South Africa, Benguela Cove Lagoon Estate. Wine tastings are also available, as well as tours of the estate’s Sussex Wine vineyards, which will produce their first sparkling varietals in 2024.
Christmas Afternoon Tea: December 1st to 24th. Thursday to Sunday, 13:00 - 15:00.
Leonardslee Illuminated: November 24th to 27th; November 30th to December 4th; and then December 7th to 21st. Opens 16:15 until late.
