Penshurst Place and Gardens

Asset 1

Set in the beautiful Weald of Kent, Penshurst Place & Gardens and the surrounding estate have stood on the banks of the river Medway since the 14th century, when the awe-inspiring medieval Baron's Hall was completed in 1341.

The Hall, crowned by an original 60ft high chestnut beamed ceiling is an unmissable sight for visitors to the ancestral home of the Sidney family who have taken care of the estate since 1552.

Amongst the many garden highlights within the 11 acres of formal grounds is the celebrated 100-metre peony border containing four varieties of heavenly-scented pink double peonies as well as a number of herbaceous and mixed borders.

The double herbaceous border Jubilee Walk follows Gertrude Jekyll's principle of hotly coloured beds extending through the palette to cooler tones, while the Blue and Yellow border contains two unique varieties of Iris cultivated for Penshurst Place by specialist British breeder Olga Wells.

Add to this over 5,000 roses, almost 500 fruit trees, 12,500 spring flowering tulip bulbs in the Italian Garden, ponds and fountains, ancient trees and parkland, lakes and woodland, globes and heraldic topiary and it is easy to see why Penshurst Place is one of Kent's most enduring and cherished gardens.
