Five acres of gardens in the heart of the South Downs National Park. A short lime avenue leads to the Topiary Garden with its amusing animals and birds in clipped box and yew. Beyond the stone balustraded bridge a riot of hollyhocks can be seen in high summer in front of the beautiful 15th century house. The house has been the family home of Peter Thorogood (1927-2025) and Roger Linton (1939-present) for over 40 years.

They have been responsible for its remarkable restoration, receiving MBEs from Queen Elizabeth II for their efforts. In addition to period furniture, it contains a series of remarkable personal collections in the many fine panelled rooms, and the stunning Victorian Music Room. The Peter Thorogood Library includes the largest private collection of the works of Victorian author, poet and caricaturist, Thomas Hood. The upper lawn is enclosed by herbaceous borders, while the lower lawn has clipped yew hedges and roses, with an exceptional example of the 'Living Fossil' tree, the prehistoric Ginkgo biloba.

Peter and Roger were able to reunify large parts of the original estate that had previously been lost. These 'Secret Gardens' include a mix of formal 'garden-rooms' and wilder woodland areas. This includes: a) A long Victorian fruit wall and the remains of the original heated pineapple pits and stove house; b) A Jubilee Rose Garden commemorating the Queen Elizabeth's Golden and Diamond Jubilees; c) A Terracotta Garden with central fountain, complemented by colourful herbaceous borders; d) An unusual circular English Poetry Garden, with a bust of Lord Byron, a long-curved pergola, and poems displayed around the circular internal hedge; e) a wilder Woodland Walk leading to a Landscape Water Garden lake, with its island and water-feature.
