The Swiss Garden
The Swiss Garden is an outstanding example of the Regency fashion for creating landscapes in a picturesque alpine style. Serpentine paths lead to cleverly contrived vistas, many of which focus on the garden's focal point, the lovely thatched Swiss Cottage, which today serves as a quaint wedding ceremony venue. Beautiful wrought-iron bridges, ponds, sweeping lawns and the magnificent Pulhamite-lined Grotto & Fernery have all been given a new lease of life by a recent landmark restoration, funded by a Heritage Lottery grant. The Garden is a peaceful, tranquil space, with 13 listed features and an adjacent woodland sculpture trail.
Resident in the garden are peacocks and a host of other wildlife. Craft activities and trails for children are available during school holidays, and events such as outdoor theatre and workshops take place every year and can be booked online (www.shuttleworth.org/whats-on).
