Winderwath

The five acre garden was originally laid out at the beginning of the twentieth century, being added to and altered in the nineteen fifties. The mature trees, including Wellingtonia, cut leaved beech and the Atlantic Cedar were all planted at the end of the nineteenth century, with the Ginkgo, Stewartia and several varieties of conifers and other trees added in the nineteen fifties.
The local red sandstone walls are topped with rockeries. The planting included Roscoa. The limestone rockery near the orchard has colour most of the summer. The herbaceous borders are full of perennials and annuals with various varieties of Salvia. The pond, which is fed by a spring in the field, has a large Primula bed. The island in the middle is covered by Gunnera. This is lovely in the spring when the Mallard and Tufted ducks are nesting. There are also picnic tables near the pond.
The vegetables in the large kitchen garden are for sale when in season, the autumn Raspberries are delicious. The Salvia cuttings are brought on in the greenhouse in the winter and the Dahlia tubers stored. Other less hardy plants such as Canna are also brought in during the winter. Apricots and Nectarines grow in the greenhouse in the summer.
